Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd has reportedly opposed the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) proposal to bring Over-The-Top (OTT) content services under the regulatory framework of the Indian Telecommunications Act, 2023. According to a Business Line report, Jio expressed in its response to TRAI that there is no valid justification for subjecting OTT content services to the regulatory requirements of the Act.
Jio’s opposition comes at a time when the debate around the regulation of OTT platforms is gaining momentum in India. These platforms include giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Universal Studios, and Warner Brothers, which are known for delivering a wide range of digital content directly to users.
The telecom company, which has transformed itself into one of the leading digital service providers, argued that OTT content services fundamentally differ from traditional telecom services and should not be regulated under the same framework. Jio emphasized that OTT platforms operate as independent entities providing entertainment and information, and their operations do not rely on the physical infrastructure of telecom networks.
This stance reflects a broader industry concern that regulating OTT platforms under the telecom framework could stifle innovation, increase operational costs, and hinder the growth of India's burgeoning digital ecosystem.
Jio’s entry into the content delivery network segment has further strengthened its position in the digital space, putting it alongside global leaders like Netflix and Amazon. The outcome of TRAI’s consultation on this matter will be critical in shaping the future of OTT services and their regulation in India.
